People are concerned about the amount of ear wax they have. They worry that they will get painful ear infections if they
don’t remove their earwax. However, the NHS does not provide people with an opportunity to have their ears syringed,
as this is not free.

If you find that your ears have a lot of earwax, this can be very uncomfortable. You may hear a scraping sound when
you move your head or turn it. If you have been having a cold or have a chronic sinus infection, the buildup of earwax
can be very painful. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is time to visit your optician. Most opticians will be able
to remove your earwax without any problems.
If you are worried that you may have an earwax problem, you should consult a doctor. A doctor will be able to examine
your ears to check if they are inflamed or infected. He or she may also ask you to show them your ear.

Your GP or practice nurse will look inside your ears to check if they’re blocked and might carry out some simple
hearing tests. They may suggest using eardrops for a bit longer, or they may carry out a minor procedure called ear
irrigation to clean out your ear canal. It can take two or three weeks for your earwax to clear after you’ve had ear
irrigation. This will reduce the chances of getting ear infections, which can be painful and lead to other problems.

You’ll know if you have ear wax build up if there’s a thick, whitish substance in your ear. You’ll also know that it’s not
healthy if it looks yellow or orange. You can sometimes hear a tapping noise as well. This is usually caused by dryness
in the ear. You can also get some mild pain or discomfort. If you’re not sure about the sound, you can ask your GP to
examine your ears to find out what’s going on. Sometimes people have a white discharge from their ear and this can
also indicate that you have ear wax buildup.
